You Are Here: Brett Keyser
Independence National Historical Park
These performances ended 29 June 2008.
Join this unpredictable performance artist in a theatrical walk in the Park—unlike any other you've ever taken. Urban nature might surprise you—and you might even locate yourself.
Brett Keyser leads 14 interactive, experiential "performance/expeditions"
through Independence National Historical Park's urban terrain. Intriguing to
anyone interested in contemporary performance practices, these journeys are
riffs on early explorers' expeditions. Partly scripted and partly
improvisational, they bow to chance encounters and the whims of nature.
Designed to appeal both to tourists, who rarely go beyond the famous Park sites, and to locals, who rarely explore their own backyard, these performative expeditions are both informative and entertaining, prompting more questions than answers. Where did all the cobblestones come from? How do you find an underground creek? Is that building really only 50 years old? What's under that rock? Keyser leads participants in examining the layers of natural and social history embedded in the buildings, the streets, and the greenery of this grand urban Park.
Keyser is accompanied both by a Park Ranger and by video artist Roderick Coover as "expedition artist." These performances are family-friendly.
